Sydney's YVC GL757 Fundraiser

My name is Sydney Smith, and I am a junior at Christopher Newport University and a member of the Bonner Service Scholars program. Service has become a central part of who I am and how I see the world. Through my work as a team leader for YVCHR, I have had the amazing opportunity to not only serve my community, but to help empower young people to do the same. YVC is more than just volunteering, it is about building confident, compassionate leaders. Youth are given the chance to engage in meaningful, hands-on service projects that address real needs in our community, while also building life and work skills. Watching youth step into leadership roles, try new things, and realize the impact they can have has been one of the most rewarding parts of my college experience. 

As someone who hopes to become a teacher, this work is especially meaningful to me. I am passionate about helping the next generation grow not only academically but most importantly as people who care about others and their communities. YVC shows youth that their voices matter right now (not just in the future when they are adults) and that they have the power to create positive change.
