WVEC News Story 2025 - Nursing CAP mentors future healthcare professionals

WVEC News Story 2024 - A look at Suffolk nonprofit Nursing Cap, Inc.

While Nursing CAP, Inc.’s story may initially resemble countless others, beneath its ordinary exterior lies an enduring team of dedicated professionals tirelessly propelling our mission forward.  Nursing Careers and Pathways is a program committed to providing professional resources to underserved and first-generation college students pursuing careers in healthcare and STEM.  What sets us apart is not the number of achievements, but the depth of impact we’ve made in the lives of our participants – middle and high school students.  The messages of joy and success we receive from present and past participants, as well as their families, are not merely words on a page; they are testaments to the profound transformation we've witnessed. Each letter is a reminder of the lives touched, the dreams realized, and the futures forever changed by Nursing CAP’s small group’s collective efforts.  Like Kenya’s excited note to our executive director, Dr. Regina McKinney, telling her that she wanted to give her an update on her journey and excitedly announcing, she got into Dental School and writing, “I’m going to be a dentist!” Our story may seem like many others, but within the heart of it lies something truly extraordinary.  And it's this – something that goes beyond the usual: a strong narrative woven with resilience, rewards, and an unwavering resolve – that truly defines our journey.

Resilience is crucial for everyone involved in our program. Our volunteer tutors exemplify resilience as they assist participants with their math and science schoolwork, which are commonly challenging subjects. Given our program's focus on introducing students to nursing and healthcare careers, strong skills in math and science are essential. We emphasize to students that speaking up to answer questions, even if their answer is incorrect, or nervously asking a question when they are unsure is a valuable learning experience. Through these experiences, students can develop resilience.

In addition to emphasizing the significance of resilience in our program, the following information showcases the impressive results attained through our Scholarships Awarded, Supportive Activities, Outcomes, and Alumni Achievements:

Indeed, we've opened doors of opportunity for deserving students like Kenya, lighting the path towards their educational dreams. But our commitment goes beyond financial aid. It's not just about the destinations; it's about the journeys we've walked alongside these individuals, instilling in them the belief that they are capable of achieving greatness.

Yet, our work is far from over. Since our collaboration began in 2016 with the Give Local 757 initiative, our journey has been nothing short of a remarkable story. But the road ahead is still long, and we need your support now more than ever. Join us as we continue this extraordinary story together. Even the smallest contribution can make a significant difference. Will you lend us your hand to change the future of a child in Hampton Roads?
