Transport Modes: Commercial Airline Tickets Mercy Medical Airlift (MMA) administers charitable or deep-discount airline ticket programs for patients and patient escorts on behalf of various airlines. Ambulatory patient travel in excess of 1,000 miles necessitates the use of airline resources. Special circumstances can make use of these programs for even shorter distances advisable. MMA personnel are highly experienced in these diverse and often changing airline patient ticket programs. Volunteer Pilot Organizations Volunteer pilots are available to patients and an escort needing transportation for medical evaluation, diagnosis or treatment. Patients must be ambulatory, which means they must be able to walk, enter and exit the plane with little or no assistance, and require no medical care (i.e., doctor or nurse) en route. There must be a financial or compelling need for the flight. Volunteer pilot organizations can only assist when the destination is within 1,000 miles. Air Ambulance Coordination Air ambulance assistance services are available to act as an advocate to help locate and coordinate bed-to-bed air ambulance services and/or medically assisted commercial travel. Our purpose is to help patients and families through a difficult health crisis through compassionate counseling and working to lower air ambulance and medically assisted travel costs. Who We Are

Mercy Medical Angels (MMA) is probably the best kept secret around. Despite our lack of notoriety, Mercy Medical Angels has provided more than 250,000 patient trips using transportation on the ground with gas cards, bus and train tickets and in the air with commercial airlines and volunteer pilots. Mercy Medical Angels helps low-income children, adults, cancer patients, Veterans and their families by providing FREE transportation to the patient and their caregiver.
The organization is unique because we address the long-distance transportation barriers patients face when seeking specialized, life-saving medical care. Thanks to our supporters, 24,520 trips were provided last year serving patients across the country. Of those, 5,071 were for low-income residents of Hampton Roads.
MMA believes that access to quality medical treatment is a basic human right and should not be denied due to a person’s lower economic status and is proud to play a vital part in the delivery of effective healthcare. Our patient surveys show that 80% of those served would not have reached their critical medical treatments were it not for the free transportation provided.
