Every night, in our community, children go to sleep without knowing where they’ll wake up next.

At Menchville House, we make sure they don’t have to.

We are a 64-bed emergency shelter for families experiencing homelessness in Newport News. Behind every door is a story, a mother doing everything she can to keep her children safe, a family rebuilding after crisis, a child who just wants a bed, a routine, and a chance to feel like everything will be okay again.

For over 25 years, Menchville House has been that place.

What began in 1998 as a leap of faith by three women has grown into a lifeline for more than 3,500 families, families who have moved from fear and instability to safety, healing, and independence.

Today, we serve over 200 local residents each year, the majority of them children.

When a family walks through our doors, they receive more than shelter. They receive:

• A safe, private place to sleep
• Warm meals and daily essentials
• Compassionate, trauma-informed case management
• Help finding employment and stable income
• Support securing permanent housing
• Resources for health, education, and financial stability
• Programs designed specifically for children

But most importantly, they receive something they haven’t had in a long time:

Hope.

Recently, we expanded our capacity to serve even more families, because the need in our community continues to grow. Yet even with more space, too many families are still facing nights of uncertainty.
