We show up for one another. That’s the promise.
Every day, our community quietly upholds a social contract: that we will care for one another across generations, cultures, and life experiences, especially when it becomes hardest to do so alone. Through Meals on Wheels, that promise is made visible. One knock on the door, one delicious meal, one moment of connection at a time.
The people we serve are our neighbors: teachers, veterans, nurses, first responders, and so many more who built and sustained the communities we call home. They are our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. Now, many face isolation, limited mobility, or financial hardship. In fact, 70% of the older adults we serve live alone without sufficient social or caregiver support, more than half are surviving on less than $25,000 a year, and all have chronic conditions and disabilities that limit driving, cooking, and engagement.
Ms. Peggy, 83, a retired accountant and widow who lives alone with her dog Chester, has been with us just over a year and shares what this program means to her:
Ms. Peggy & Chester. Our PAWS program is a great bonus service, providing Chester's food each month and supporting their wellbeing and bond. This program has been a great help. It was easier to skip a meal than to decide what to make. Now I know I’m having balanced meals, and my doctor sees the difference at my six-month checkups.
My dog, Chester, and I greet every volunteer as though they are family. Their kindness to us is remarkable. Each one gets a gold star. Through Meals on Wheels, I’ve made more friends. I enjoy hearing others’ perspectives on aging and current events. How different the world feels as you grow older! I especially love when children volunteer. They show me their artwork, and it brightens my day.”
What our senior and disabled neighbors receive is not just a meal—it is dignity, connection, and the reassurance that they are seen and cared for.
There is joy in this work. It lives in the smile exchanged at the doorway, in the brief conversations that become the highlight of someone’s day, and in the relationships that form over time. Volunteers and staff alike will tell you: we receive far more than we give.
But this promise does not sustain itself. At a time when federal cuts to the social safety net are placing ever-increasing strain on seniors, your support is more critical than ever.
Local funding is vital to everything we do. It allows us to respond to the unique needs of our community and reach more homebound older adults without delay. This year alone, we are on track to serve nearly 400 seniors across Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach—delivering 100,000 meals and providing more than 40,000 safety checks and moments of connection, ensuring our neighbors (and their furry friends!) are not only fed, but safe and supported.
Supporting Meals on Wheels meets an immediate and growing need while affirming who we are as a community. It is about honoring those who once cared for us and ensuring that we create a world we would want to grow old in ourselves.
Because one day, we will all stand on the other side of this equation.
Your gift helps carry this promise forward. It ensures that a neighbor is nourished, seen, and valued. Not just today, but every day.
Join us in showing up for one another. Together, we’re building a bigger table, and there’s room for everyone here.
