Celebrating 50 Years of Empowering Lives Through Literacy

For half a century, Literacy for Life has been empowering adults with the foundational skills they need to thrive at work, at home, and in their communities. Through personalized support in areas like basic literacy, English language learning, and workforce credentialing preparation, we meet learners where they are and help them build the future they envision.

Our learners come from all walks of life—representing 64 countries and speaking 44 languages—each with a unique story and dream:

  • Oumar is learning English to fulfill his dream of becoming a commercial truck driver.
  • Marie Elena earned her dental assistant certificate and recently passed the U.S. citizenship exam.
  • Shabana completed her phlebotomy certification and is launching a new career in healthcare.
  • Dang is developing the computer skills she needs to gain independence and confidence.

What began in Greater Williamsburg has now expanded to include Newport News and Hampton—making Literacy for Life the only community-based literacy organization serving the Virginia Peninsula.

None of this would be possible without the generosity of our donors. Your support fuels real, lasting change—not just for individuals, but for families and entire communities. By investing in adult literacy, you’re helping to build a stronger economy, a more vibrant community, and a future full of possibility.
