Honor Over 12,000 Years of History at Fort Monroe

From iconic buildings to an ever-evolving shoreline, Fort Monroe is where Virginians gather to honor our shared past and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors.

We’re proud to launch the Indigenous Interpretation Project, telling the story of over12,000 years of human settlement at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. With support from Indigenous interpreters and elders, we’re introducing a new educational program for local public-school students—teaching them to build traditional canoes in the style of Native American tribes.

These student-built canoes will be on display during the Sail250 event next summer, representing the deep roots of maritime innovation in North America. Throughout the year, Fort Monroe guests can witness the construction process and engage with interpreters as they bring this history to life.

Help us raise $5,000 to support this inspiring journey. Your contribution will help preserve and share Indigenous maritime knowledge for generations to come—just in time for America’s 250th anniversary.
