Our History

Sister Cities' roots go back to President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s 1956 “People to People” program that envisioned a network of citizen diplomats advocating for peace and prosperity. Eisenhower reasoned that if people from different cultures could build partnerships to increase understanding, it would lessen the chance of new conflicts. In 1982, Newport News City Council created the “Sister Cities Commission” and established the City's first international partnership with Neyagawa, Japan. In 1999, the commission became a 501c(3) non-profit.
