At the Newport News Green Foundation, we work to preserve, transform, and promote green spaces in our city. We have several exciting planting projects, but we need your help! 

Upcoming Projects:

Indigenous Garden at the Sarfan Food Forest

• Located in Southeast Newport News, the Sarfan Food Forest will include a diverse ecosystem of edible plants like fruit trees, vegetables, berries, and more! The Sarfan Food Forest will be free and accessible to the public and is intended to address food scarcity in the area.
• One of our first planting projects will focus on the Tsenacommacah Indigenous Garden. In consultation with the Nansemond Indian Nation, we hope to create a sustainable and ecological garden full of native plants, fruits, and vegetables.

Native Plants at the Hilton Ravine

• Located adjacent to Hilton Elementary School, this 6-acre property is characterized by a natural stormwater ravine. This green space also features an outdoor classroom and walking path. We are working with community members to remove invasives and plant native plants and trees, beginning at the outdoor classroom and moving through the ravine as funding allows.

Who We Are

The Newport News Green Foundation enhances the quality of life in Newport News by preserving, transforming, and promoting green spaces throughout the city.

We accomplish this mission through:

• The preservation of green space in a dynamic urban environment as a means to enhance the quality of life, increase property value and support the growth of the city.
• Transforming vacant and/or blighted properties into more visually attractive spaces.
• When possible, making preserved spaces useful, active spaces.
• Forming partnerships with like-minded groups and organizations to educate citizens, promote resiliency within the city, and support projects that complement our mission.
