Community Alternatives Incorporated

COMMUNITY ALTERNATIVES, INC. (CAI) was founded in 1980 to serve the needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In 1983, CAI expanded to include vocational and residential programs, strengthening its support for individuals seeking greater independence and employment opportunities. 

Through its agile and person-centered approach, CAI continues to make a lasting impact in the communities it serves. With 11 adult group homes in the Tidewater region, CAI Virginia Program encompasses group home, day support (adults and children), community engagement, and community coaching.

Over time, CAI has grown and adapted to meet the evolving needs of the populations it serves. In 2005, the CAI dba Community Choices, Inc (CCI) expanded into North Carolina, marking a significant milestone by launching services for pregnant and parenting women with substance use disorders—further broadening its program portfolio. 

Today, CAI operates as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with corporate headquarters in Norfolk, VA. With a workforce of 200 employees, CAI remains committed to delivering essential services in mental health, substance use treatment, and intellectual and developmental disability support.
