What YVC Built In Me - Luke Phillips

When I first got involved with the Youth Volunteer Corps of Hampton Roads, I didn’t expect it to change how I see my community — but it did.

One project that really stuck with me was building a sundial ⏳. It wasn’t just about putting something together — it took planning, teamwork, and problem-solving to create something people can actually use and learn from every day. Seeing it finished made me realize that even as students, we can build things that last and make an impact.

Through YVC, I’ve helped create things that truly matter — whether it’s projects like that sundial, supporting families 🤝, or improving spaces in our community 🏡. And in every one of those moments, I’ve learned something important:

Service doesn’t just help others — it builds you too.

It builds purpose 🎯

Now, as part of the Youth Advisory Board, I get to help lead that impact and make sure even more students have the opportunity to step up and make a difference.

This year, during Give Local 757, we’re working to activate 1,400 youth across Hampton Roads. Just $256 supports one student for an entire year, giving them access to service projects, leadership opportunities, and a community that pushes them to grow 🌱.

I’ve seen firsthand what that experience can do — because it’s done that for me.
