The Governor's School for the Arts is a center for innovation that develops excellence, nurtures creativity, inspires artistic vision and builds communities with a passion for the arts. GSA offers arts training for Hampton Roads public high school students in six departments: Dance, Instrumental Music, Musical Theatre, Theater & Film, Visual Arts and Vocal Music. Each department trains students to develop in their art form with a focus on conservatory style study. GSA hosts more than 50 productions and exhibitions each school yearly, creating performance and exhibition experiences that are conducted in a professional atmosphere. Our students learn the real-life workings of on-stage, backstage, and gallery life, preparing them for an incredible future in the arts.
The Governor's School for the Arts Foundation, created in 1989, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to raise funds for the students and programs of GSA through collaborative partnerships with individuals, businesses, foundations and local, state and federal agencies. The Governor's School for the Arts Foundation raises funds crucial to operating an arts high school. In addition to raising funds for educational experiences and program needs, the Foundation also provides scholarships to help graduates take the next step in their artistic and academic journeys.
Student Assistance Fund
About 12 percent of GSA students qualify for financial assistance each year, and through the Foundation we are able to provide critical support to GSA students through the Deborah Thorpe Student Assistance Fund. The Fund ensures access to dance shoes, musical instruments, film equipment, sheet music, art supplies, field trips and essential technology. Each school year, dozens of GSA students are awarded financial assistance so each student receives the same opportunities no matter their socioeconomic status. It is vital that each student enrolled is able to partake equally in the creative life and work available at GSA.
